When you keep the following items in mind, you can shop securely over the Internet using your credit card, debit card or while using online home banking and bill payment programs--without compromising your safety and security.
  • Use a secure browser--This is the software you use to navigate the Internet. Most computers come with a browser installed, or you can download some browsers free of charge over the Internet. Verify your browser complies with industry security standards, such as Security Sockets Layer (SSL), which scrambles the purchase information you send over the Internet and helps to secure your transaction.
  • Shop with companies you trust--If you're not familiar with an online merchant, ask for a paper brochure or catalog before you make a purchase. Also, determine the company's refund and return policies before you place an order. Never download information over the Internet unless you are dealing with a reputable company.
  • Always close your browser or select "Exit" after using a secured site--such as online banking, online bill pay and purchasing forms. On secure sites, while providing personal or financial information, always look for the icon of a lock or a key in the lower left or right corner of the computer screen.
  • Keep your passwords private and as insignificant as possible--Make sure that no one is watching when you enter your password, don't write your passwords down, don't share your passwords with anyone. When selecting a password, choose a series of letters, numbers and symbols that would be impossible to guess.
  • Anti-virus software is your computer's best defense against viruses and worms.
  • Make sure an updated firewall is enabled, especially when using DSL or a cable modem.
  • Determine how your personal information that you provide will be used, stored, and protected by each company--Review their privacy policy and "opt-out" choices provided.
